透水砖其实是从国外传入的，透水砖起源于荷兰,在荷兰人围海造城的过程中，发现排开海水后的地面会因为长期接触不到水分而造成持续不断的地面沉降。一旦海岸线上的堤坝被冲开，海水会迅速冲到比海平面低很多的城市把整个临海城市全部淹没。为了使地面不再下沉，荷兰人制造了一种长200毫米宽100毫米50或60毫米高的小型路面砖铺设在街道路面上，并使砖与砖之间预留了2毫米的缝隙。这样下雨时雨水会从砖之间的缝隙中渗入地下。这就是后来很有名的荷兰砖。

In order to prevent the ground from sinking, the Dutch created a small pavement brick that was 200 millimeters long, 100 millimeters wide, 50 or 60 millimeters high, and laid on the street surface, leaving a gap of 2 millimeters between the bricks. When it rains like this, rainwater will seep into the ground through the gaps between the bricks. This is the later famous Dutch brick.
